National Science Teachers Association Southern Area Convention
Representatives of the MAE Center Student Leadership Council attended the 54th 2002 EERI Annual Meeting Return to Long Beach: Origins, Development, and Future of Earthquake Engineering on February 6-9 at the Westin Hotel, Long Beach, CA. Attendees received a guided tour of the past, present, and probable future of the earthquake professions. Experts from industry, academia, and government shared hands-on experiences with emerging earthquake technologies. With support from FEMA, several travel grants were awarded to encourage student members to attend the Annual Meeting. MAE Center students receiving travel grants and participating in the student poster session included Arzhang Alimoradi from the University of Memphis, poster The Attenuation of Shear Eaves in the Mississippi Embayment; Omer Erbay from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, poster Performance of Rehabilitated Unreinforced Masonry Components; and David Peralta from Texas A&M University, poster Seismic Performance of Rehabilitated Floor and Roof Diaphragms. Graduate students Can Simsir from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Amber Grubbs from Texas A&M University also attended the Annual Meeting.
