Sagamore Hills School
MAE Center students Bryant Nielson, Leonardo Duenas-Osorio, and Jamie Padgett from Georgia Institute of Technology were joined by EERI members Jason McCormick and Monique Hite for a visit to a 2nd grade discovery class at Sagamore Hills Elementary School, Atlanta, GA, on February 3, 2004. The second graders were given a brief introduction to earthquakes and viewed photos of the damage that earthquakes can cause. This was followed by a discussion of earthquake (emergency) preparedness which was reinforced by the MAE Center Earthquake Preparedness and Safety video. A hands-on activity followed with the children constructing three story buildings out of K-Nex. The buildings were then subjected to the Kobe and Northridge ground motion records on the miniature shaketable. The program was very successful in creating interest in earthquakes, math, and science.
