Graduate Research Assistant Field Mission 2001

Scott Deaton from Georgia Institute of Technology, Sarah Orton from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Megan Dockter from University of Memphis, and Juan Caicedo from Washington University traveled to London and then to Turkey to engage in a hands-on field assessment exercise. Students departed from London to Istanbul on May 5th, 2001, and returned to London on May 12th. The field mission is an annual event held by Imperial College, London, England, designed specifically to train earthquake engineers.

Students visited the areas affected by the strong earthquakes of 1999: Izmit, Yalova, Degermendere, Gulcuk, Adapazari and Duzce. The trip not only included site visits to the affected areas (accompanied by local experts) but also a visit to the construction site of an impressive bridge that had just been completed (not yet in use) when the earthquake occurred. Further, introductory lectures from distinguished researchers at the University of Istanbul were also scheduled. MAE Center award recipients received funds to cover round trip travel to London, travel to the earthquake site, participation in the weeklong field trip, and food and lodging.
