DesRoches Receives Huber Award

Mid-America Earthquake Center Leadership Team Member Reginald DesRoches, associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, has been selected as the 2007 recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize for his contributions in the field of seismic design and retrofit of bridges in the central and southeastern regions of the United States. The selection committee particularly noted the inclusion of DesRoches' recommendations in the recent Federal Highway Administration manuals and codes. The Huber Award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize, is given to younger ASCE members who can be expected to continue fruitful careers in research. It was presented during the Structures Congress, May 7, 2007 in Long Beach, California. DesRoches is the deputy director of the NEESR-Grand Challenge Project, ÃÂSeismic Risk Mitigation for Port Systems,and directs the Transportation Networks Program for the Mid-America Earthquake (MAE) Center. He is an associate editor for the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, and is a member of the EERI Learning from Earthquakes Advisory Committee. He has been on the Board for Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment for the National Academy of Engineering since 2002. Previous honors he has received include a 2001 National Science Foundation "ÃÂCareer" award and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2002. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.
